MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Lake Minnetonka was the perfect spot on Friday for downtown kids and injured veterans.

A nonprofit called Inner City Surf has partnered with Wake for Warriors. Organizations include people who enjoy water sports but don’t always have the opportunity to try them out.

“The sun is out and I hope the water isn’t too cold,” said Zion Brinson of Brooklyn Park.

Not only was the water not too cold, but the conditions were perfect for Brinson to try something new, and the wakeboard didn’t disappoint.

“I like the fact that it was very cold and that they didn’t rush you. You take your time. It was really fun, ”said Brinson.

Brinson was one of seven children of Inner City Surf to catch the waves on the July morning.

“They’re having a blast with it. They are fearless. They fall, they get up. They fall, they get up. It’s just a great way for us to get kids out who don’t normally have access, ”said Shawn Taher, Founder of Inner City Surf.

For injured veterans who participate, it’s a chance to support children like Brinson, while supporting each other.

“I just got out here hanging out with some brothers. We miss this coalition together, ”said Tony Mullis.

Mullis is a Marine and double amputee from Georgia who fell in love with Lake Minnetonka; his skills are undeniable.

“It gives me a feeling of normalcy. I don’t feel isolated. These guys don’t try to help me every time I fall. They laugh with me. It’s relaxed, ”Mullis said.

“Dave took most of the weekend to have me surf because he had never taught a blind person to surf before,” said Mike Nelson.

Even though he can’t see, Army veteran Mike Nelson still has a vision for wakesurfing. He was at the lake to have fun and heal himself.

‘The stress level with people, you can feel the emotions. And I can feel it flowing and there’s a glimmer of happiness coming out of the wave. It’s pretty awesome, ”said Nelson.

The groups set off from Surfside Park in Mound. This is where the festivities will take place this weekend, as well as the Minnesota Wake Surf Championship Series which runs through Saturday.
