Stacker compiled a list of the best public high schools in Washington using rankings from Niche. It ranked Olympia High School as the 21st best among 884 public high schools in the state and the only school in Thurston County to make the top 25 list.

As filmmaker and writer Nora Ephron said in a 1996 commencement address at Wellesley College, “Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours.” If so, high school may be one of the biggest dress rehearsals of all.

It’s a place where students explore their interests, immerse themselves in extracurricular activities, finally gain the freedom to choose their own courses, and prepare for college or work. For many of these students and their families, public education is essential: 48.1 million students enrolled in public primary and secondary schools in 2020; and there are almost 24,000 public high schools in the United States, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

For many anxious parents, getting their child into the best of these public high schools is of utmost importance. Some families even move to enter better school districts. However, among these thousands of schools, a few stand out for their academic excellence, incredible track record, and future success for their young students.

Here’s how it breaks down: Niche uses eight factors for its ranking, with each factor having a different weight. A whopping 60% of the score is based on academics and grades, which are calculated using state assessment proficiency tests, SAT/ACT scores, and survey responses. From there, culture and diversity, surveys of parents and students about their overall experiences, and teachers each contribute 10% of the score. Finally, scores for each school’s clubs and activities, health and safety, resources and facilities, and sports account for 2.5% each.
